Dump CakeMay 25, 2013 By nosurndr
When I make this I use 2 cans of cherries to 1 can of pineapple tidbits. Crushed pineapple seems overly sweet and you can't taste a good mouthful of pineapple. Or double same if I want more filling than topping. Keeps it from being oversweet. Also I use lemon cake mix, again to cut down on the sweetness. I just cut the butter into slices and lay them in rows on top of the cake mix. I like the mixture of softer cake (without or very little butter) and the crunchier parts with more butter. I definitely cook this around an hour until the top is very crunchy and brown. First recipe to teach to kids. Couldn't be easier and always comes out delicious. Serve with whipped cream.

Dump Cake VariationMarch 05, 2013 By dkimari
I made this yesterday w/ raspberry filling & a lemon cake mix. No nuts or pineapple. It is really good! Next time I think apple w/ spice cake mix & walnuts (that a friend of mine suggested) would be delicious! Thanks for such an easy recipe w/ so many varieties! =:)

YUMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYY!October 07, 2012 By hummingbird777
Delicious! Very sweet, I think it was from the cherry pie filling I used. One tip: after it's been baking for about 5 - 10 minutes, take it out to check. Smooth over any dry spots with a spoon to blend the melted butter. That should help to bake it evenly. Fun recipe, Enjoy!

Amazingly easy!!!July 07, 2012 By NewLearner1
I followed the instructions exactly after watching the Youtube video of this recipe. I'm trying to learn how to cook so I just thought this would be a test run until I could get the recipe right but to my surprise it came out perfect and the crust was very crispy. My boyfriend was so proud of me and everyone wanted the recipe. One thing: I tried to cut down on the butter by using 1 1/2 sticks but once that melted I saw some spots were still powdery from the cake mix so I covered those spots with the rest of the butter in the recipe to be safe. I saw on some recipes that they only cooked them for 30 minutes but trust me an hour is the perfect time to cook it. Mines looks exactly like the picture

scrumptious!!August 04, 2011 By lajudy
As someone who has been faithful to chocolate all my life, I was stunned that it was love at first bite with this dump cake! Served with vanilla ice cream it is delicious. The recipe is so easy I make it with my grandchildren. I have learned that it is crucial to cook this in the right size pan.

Too much butter!!July 21, 2011 By Equemily
When I made this recipe, my dump cake came out a gooey mess, just kind of puddles on the plate when you spoon it out of the pan. Yuck- there is a ring of melted butter rimming the stuff as it sits. Definitely will only use ONE stick of butter next time!!!

Yummo!April 09, 2011 By zerbinos4
This dish is amazing! My mom used to make it ages ago when I was a kid -- didn't like it then, but LOVE it now! It's strange, but I don't really taste the pineapple in it. Everyone I've ever served it to loves it -- it disappears at church potlucks. I've left out one of the butter sticks before, as someone suggests, but that was too dry for me. Other than the fact that you can see the cherries, so you know those are in there, it just tastes wonderful and I can't describe it. We've always called it ""dump cake,"" too, though; and I wish it had a different name. But simply wonderful and easy!

One fruit each end of cakeSeptember 28, 2010 By Saundra.butler
I made a double recipe using cherry at one end and apple on the other in a 11x14 pan. This allowed those who preferred one fruit over the other to enjoy the cake. Very well received by all.

Love it!April 15, 2010 By earhartcarol
Love this recipe, it was easy and good. I used one of the tips from a previous review and melted one stick butter and mixed it in with the cake mix...felt much better about eating (and serving to my family). I would love to know what a previous reviewer used with the pumpkin she uses in the fall. Do you still use the pineapple?

Smells delicious!March 14, 2010 By debbieireland
I remember when my nephew saved me on Thanksgiving by making me a cherry dump cake. It was a huge hit. He was 3 when he helped his mom make it! I have this cake in the oven right now to be followed by a blackberry one and it smells delicious!

A forgotten favoriteDecember 19, 2009 By socarmom
I had forgotten how much I loved this dessert! It's been a while since I made it and now I remember why I loved it so much! And it's easy to always keep the ingredients on hand and ready for an impromptu visit or dinner - a cinch to make up and bakes while you're eating dinner - done just in time to eat warm with icecream melting on the top. Yummmm! Oh, and you have to try with pumpkin pie filling for a Fall dessert!

I have used chocolate chip morsels on top, also. Like a chocolate covered cherry then.

Multiple FruitsJune 02, 2009 By MichaelsMommie
I use both cherry and blueberry pie fillings with the crushed pineapple. I also use cocunut and pecans as toppings. When served with vanilla ice cream, it reminds me of a banana split without the bananas!

who would have thought!May 01, 2009 By nikiwg
I reluctantly make this with my kid's cooking class and was amazed at how much they ALL loved it. Then, when the parents came to pick their kids up, there was enough left for everyone to try some -- again, eyes lit up, smiles all around -- I was totally surprised. Not my kind of cake but a HUGE SUCCESS in class.

One calorie saving hintApril 26, 2008 By Juliewriter
I appreciate this Dump Cake recipe, but a dish load of calories can be saved if you only use one stick of melted butter. Melt one half cup of stick butter - and I do use butter, in the microwave and pour this into the dry yellow cake mix. Toss this mixture until the ingredients become crumbly. Then spread the cake mix moistened with melted butter over the layer of undrained crushed pineapple and cherry pie filling. This is a good and easy recipe, served with ice cream or whipped topping, it's always a winner.

YUMMY!!!April 09, 2008 By jade.digital
My mother and I made this, and we substituted a can of peaches for the cherry pie filling, and used oatmeal instead of nuts as the final topping. It turned out so moist and not too sweet, like most dump cakes sometimes can, like a cobbler. The peaches were the perfect substitution.

My Special Dump CakeMarch 30, 2008 By boopisit
I make this recipe SO MUCH. I did change it a bit for different flavors, and YUMMY. I put in 2 different pie fillings such as apple and blueberry, or apple and cherry, or peach and cherry, or peach and blueberry, or just 2 cans of any flavor of your choice, or you can put 2 cans of the same fruit filling. I find this makes it go further to feeding more family, friends, or whosoever will indulge. For diabetics I will use the sugar free pie filling and it helps a lot since my hubby is a diabetic. I do the rest pretty much the same except I will sprinkle some cinnamon on top after all the ingredients and nuts. It gives it a little extra flavor to it. EVERYONE will love it.

Awesome creation!January 11, 2008 By coopsgal
This ""cake"" is remarkable!! Not only can the kids help make it, which is always fun, but everyone in the family loves it! I mean everyone! My in-laws, my cousins, my neighboors, my church and my husbands Mason group can't live without it at meetings!! They like it a little warm with vanilla ice cream. Did I mention even the KIDS LIKE it!?!? What a brialliant idea!!!

Keeper... Dump Cake RecipeDecember 18, 2007 By Leibeauty
This is an awesome recipe. I used one stick of salted butter and one stick of margerine. Not too sweet and has a great flavor, I would describe it as ""sweet and salty"" . Just wonderful and it's become my favorite quick dessert. The only thing is, I think I might try and cut back half a stick of margerine next time. Definately, not low in fat.
