Cabbage Au Gratin Recipe

Cabbage is tossed with a tomato mixture then baked with a topping of bread crumbs and Cheddar cheese. This dish goes together fast and has a short baking time.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 of a 6-ounce can tomato paste
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup buttered bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup butter

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Fill a large pot half full of lightly-salted water and bring to a boil. Add cabbage to the pot and cook 2 minutes. Drain cabbage and return to the pot.

In a separate saucepan, combine tomato paste, water, salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring until smooth.

Pour tomato mixture over cabbage. Toss to coat. Pour into a casserole dish. Top with Cheddar cheese and bread crumbs. Dot with butter.

Bake for 15 minutes. Serve hot.

Yield: 6 servings
