Tofu Sloppy Joes Recipe

Traditional sloppy joes are made with ground beef. Try this delicious version made with tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables. Even the kids will like this vegetarian version.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup chopped sweet onions
  • 1 cup sliced crimini mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 (15 ounces) can tomato sauce
  • 2 pounds firm tofu, mashed into crumbles

Preparation:

Place a large heavy skillet over medium heat. Add butter, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, and red pepper. Sprinkle with the salt and saute about 5 minutes, until vegetables soften. Add garlic and cook an additional 1 minute to cook out the rawness.

Stir in hot sauce, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, tomato sauce, and tofu. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 minutes.

Serve Tofu Sloppy Joes in the traditional manner on buns. It also makes a great topping for pasta or rice.
