Plum Lore

The plum tree plays a significant role in Chinese mythology and is associated with great age and wisdom. Blossoms of the plum tree are carved on jade to signify resurrection.

Plums, Prunes, and Dr. Pepper® Legend

Legend has it that prunes (dried plums) are or were a main ingredient of the popular carbonated soda Dr. Pepper®. The manufacturer maintains steadfastly that prunes have never been an ingredient in their soda. So how did this rumor get started?

No one is exactly sure, however some speculate the rumor began as a result of miscommunication due to the label on the bottle and a marketing campaign around 1930. Early research had shown that most people experience drops in energy at around 10am, 2pm, and 4pm, and it was known that sugar upped energy levels. The new label for the bottle featured a clock dial with only the hours of 10, 2, and 4. The advertising campaign suggested drinking a Dr. Pepper® at those hours to boost energy.

Somehow this advertising campaign became confused with the valid medicinal claim that prunes will keep the bowels regular as well as providing a sugar boost. The legend certainly did nothing to harm the reputation of the soda as their sales continue to flourish today.
