Root beer, orange juice, ketchup, brown sugar, syrup, and spices make a fabulous barbecue sauce. The sauce may be made and refrigerated up to 2 weeks in advance.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup root beer
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1-1/2 Tablespoons dark brown sugar, packed
  • 2 Tablespoons Steen's Cane Syrup
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon peel, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Preparation:

Combine root beer, ketchup, lemon juice, orange juice, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, syrup, liquid smoke, lemon peel, ginger, garlic, and onion powder in a heavy medium-sized saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer until sauce is reduced to 1-1/2 cups volume, about 20 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper and cool slightly. Transfer to a ceramic bowl, cover and refrigerate.

This barbecue sauce can be made 2 weeks in advance. Keep refrigerated.

Yield: 1-1/2 cups
