Ingredients

  • 1 loaf crusty bread, such as French or Italian

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 tablespoon oil

  • 2 tablespoons minced onion

  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped celery

  • 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup

  • 2 tablespoons milk

  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt, to taste

  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • Parsley, for garnish

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Preheat oven to 350 F. Slice the French bread in half down the length of it. If your bread is very doughy and dense, you can scoop out some of the soft bread in the center and then add it back into the cooked meat before putting it into the bread later.

  3. Set the two halves of French bread onto a large baking sheet. Set aside.

  4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook for about 2 minutes. Add beef and brown. Drain the liquid carefully so the mixture is dry.

  5. Add the celery. Cook until celery is tender.

  6. Add the condensed soup, milk and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Stir and cook mixture is heated through, thoroughly combined, and thickened slightly. If you scooped out some of the bread earlier, turn off the heat and add it to the skillet now.

  7. Now carefully spoon the mixture into the center of one half of the French bread. Spread out evenly. Top the mixture with the shredded cheese and sprinkle with fresh parsley. Top with the other half of bread.

  8. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until cheese is melted. Let stand for 5 minutes, slice and serve.
