Apple cider is flavored with oranges and spices for the perfect hot beverage during the fall and winter, and especially good at Christmas and Thanksgiving. If you want to punch it up for the adults, add a bit of apple brandy.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups fresh orange juice (reserve rind of 1 orange)
  • 1-1/2 cups brown sugar
  • Rind of 1 orange, sliced into strips
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 Tablespoon whole cloves
  • 8 whole allspice berries
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
  • 6 quarts unsweetened apple cider
  • 3 oranges, each cut into 8 wedges for garnish

Preparation:

In a heavy saucepan, bring orange juice, brown sugar, orange rind, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg slowly to a boil, stirring often until brown sugar is melted. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Place apple cider in a larger pot. Strain the orange mixture into the cider. Heat until steaming.

Serve hot, garnished with orange wedges.

Yield: 24 servings, 8 ounces each serving
