The Breast Health Cookbook
by Dr. Bob Arnot (Little, Brown and Company)
Guide Rating -

Subtitled "Fast and Simple Recipes to Reduce the Risk of Cancer," this cookbook is the companion to 1999's bestseller "The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet", also by Dr. Bob Arnot.

When Dr. Arnot developed this healthy diet plan, he ran into a major obstacle as far as implementation in real life. No matter how logical or scientific the theory of healthy eating is, people will not change their eating regimen if it doesn't taste good. Thus began his collaboration with nutritionists Barbara Sutherland, Ph. D. and Rita Mitchell, R. D. to develop menus and recipes that appeal to the taste buds as well as fight cancer. The result is 172 recipes along with suggested breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, all without neglecting those picky taste buds.

For starters, you'll find a breakdown of the prominent foods used in the recipes along with their health benefits and how they work to prevent cancer. Ninety different menu plans with corresponding recipes cover Asian, New American and Mediterranean styles of cooking, along with a pantry listing of foods you will need to keep on hand. Recipes include an introductory paragraph with specific helpful information for each one, preparation and cooking times, and nutritional analysis.

Dr. Arnot reports that some studies seem to indicate men married to women with breast cancer have a higher risk of prostate cancer, and vice versa. In recognition of this risk, men are not left behind. Each recipe has a notation as to whether it can be modified to target prostate cancer. The recipes are also recommended to help prevent diabetes and heart disease and are suitable for the entire family.

If you're looking for meat recipes, you won't find them. In fact, you'll find less than a dozen fish recipes and only two chicken recipes. The emphasis here is on soy products, whole grains, fiber, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Recipes such as Macaroni and Cheese and Fajitas get a healthy makeover to fit in with other healthy dishes.

For those having a difficult time adjusting to healthier foods in the diet, these tasty recipes will get you on your way. Many of the recipes will also appeal to vegetarians.
